Gas Tips for caravans

1. To protect the hose from the regulator until where it disappears under the caravan from the damaging effect of Ultra violet light form the sun, sleeve it inside a black polythene hose or that spiral cable binding tubing.

2. When installing a gas fridge ensure you have heaps of ventilation below the fridges radiator and to the outside above the radiator. You can even aid this air flow with a small computer type muffin fan to suck the hot air out through the top vent. Boy it makes a big difference to the fridge performance during the summer months. These fans are available in either 12 volt or 230 volt and with a clever bit of ingenuity can even be connected through the fridge thermostat.

3. Only use soapy water and a small brush to check for gas leaks not a match or naked flame. Sounds ridiculous but people still persist in using them !! Get a torch if you cant see !!

4. Tuning in you cooker, they all have some method of adjusting the gas to air mix. burners. Adjust until the flame is just showing a yellow tip by restricting the available air to the burner, then adjust out the yellow tipping, for a nice blue flame that isn't too sharp. You may even notice after doing this you stop having blackened bottoms on you pots and things cook a bit quicker !!

5. Turn OFF the cylinder valve when not using the gas appliances inside your caravan.

6. Keep the protective paint coating on your gas cylinders maintained and you will achieve long life from your cylinders. When repainting your gas cylinder use an oil based enamel paint of a light reflecting colour, like white, do not use black as the heat absorbed into the cylinder from the sun can lead to rather serious problems, uncontrollable leakage from the cylinder relief valve, which if it ignites will endanger your life and your neighbouring caravanners.

7. Have your gas installation checked every couple of years.

8. Completely empty your gas cylinder before having it refilled. This will stop the contents becoming butane enriched, which can cause you problems in the colder months of the year, like not being able to make that morning cup of tea on a frosty morning.
